The Cologne architect Wilhelm Riphahn built this simple but functional building in 1952 on behalf of the city and based on a contract between the French Republic and the university and on a plot of land at Sachsenring 77, which was then still assigned to the Cologne university , which was then still a city hall could be. It is a listed building.

Assignment to the university

The house still belongs to the university today. The French government as employer of the institute is tenant and therefore the institute is subordinate to the French Republic and the embassy. The director of the institute, who has diplomatic status , is usually a visiting professor at the university. The cultural institute cooperates with the university in a variety of ways and is also listed as an associated institution in the course catalog.

Since January 2010, the cooperation has been intensified by the establishment of a center for interdisciplinary French and Francophone research at the Institut français, of which the embassy has a quarter of the budget of 180,000 euros. Further donations are to be raised. On the university side, the Romance scholars with Peter Blumenthal, the political scientists with Wolfgang Wessels , the historians with Jakob Vogel and the media scientist Wolfram Nitsch are involved.
