Institut français Stuttgart
The Institut français Stuttgart was opened in 1949 as the Center d'Etudes Françaises de Stuttgart by decision of the French Consulate General . The Institut français was supposed to help develop the French cultural network in Germany . The aim was, on the one hand, to promote learning of the French language and the discovery of French culture in Baden-Württemberg . On the other hand, the university and academic relations between the two countries should be expanded.
history
On April 20, 1951, André François-Poncet , French High Commissioner , celebrated the opening of the institute . Since its inception, the institute has been supported by a German foundation that provided it with a villa in Diemershaldenstrasse. After 60 years of French culture at Gänsheide, it was decided to move to the city center together with the Foundation of the Institut français Stuttgart, the French embassy, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the state capital Stuttgart in order to give French culture an appropriate presentation framework and increased visibility guarantee. Since November 2013 the Institut français has been located on Berliner Platz in the center of Stuttgart.
In September 2006 the French Consulate General and the Institute merged. The post of consul general and head of the institute were combined in one post. The institute's goals are now broader: In addition to cultural, linguistic and university dialogue, economic and political relations are now also on the program.

Cultural work
With 80 to 100 events per year in its own premises or in cooperation with the main actors and institutions from the city and region, the institute spreads contemporary French culture and promotes Franco-German exchange in various areas. Its program reaches over 30,000 people annually.
Since its inception, the institute has welcomed the great names of French culture. The institute's invitation was accepted by writers such as Alain Robbe-Grillet and Michel Houellebecq , musicians such as Francis Poulenc and Juliette Gréco , intellectuals such as Elisabeth Badinter Marguerite Duras and actors such as Jean-Louis Trintignant .
Since the late 1980s, the program has focused on the fine arts and intellectual exchange. The exhibition series “Retour de Paris” has been offering scholarship holders from the state of Baden-Württemberg since 1986 the opportunity to present the work they have realized during their stay at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. The institute also regularly organizes meetings and debates on political, social, economic and literary issues with the IZKT of the University of Stuttgart , the institute in Ludwigsburg and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart .
The high point of the program is the French Weeks each autumn, which the institute took over coordination in 2010. With 70 to 100 events, organized in cooperation with over 50 institutions, associations and artists, they give the German-French dialogue an important platform in the greater Stuttgart area.

The media library offers its visitors over 4,000 media, consisting of works from contemporary literature, children's and youth literature, current comics, magazines and films as well as a specialized library for French learners.
Across all generations, families and schoolchildren can regularly meet writers, attend readings or find out about France and studying at French universities (Pôle Campus France).
Language courses
Offering French courses is one of the institute's most important tasks. A team of qualified teachers respond to the demand for general and subject-specific French lessons from private clients (students and adults) and companies. All language courses at the Institut français Stuttgart comply with the European framework for foreign languages.
For private individuals, the institute offers a range of individual and group lessons: basic, intensive and crash courses, thematic courses and high school preparation courses. The Institut français Stuttgart offers companies the opportunity to master the language of their French business partners and to sharpen their profile.
The institute is the examination center for the internationally recognized DELF and DALF diplomas in the Stuttgart administrative region and diplomas from the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( CCIP ).
French in schools
The language advisor has the task of promoting the French language in primary and secondary schools in Baden-Württemberg and Saarland in close cooperation with the German authorities . The main goal is to promote the learning of the French language through innovative educational projects such as Cinéfête , Prix des lycéens allemands etc. and through teacher training. In addition, the young speakers from France Mobil meet over 14,000 pupils in schools in Baden-Württemberg every year. The speakers use educational aids to visit school classes in order to arouse students' interest in the French language. Every year around 5000 students in Baden-Württemberg also acquire a DELF diploma.
Friends of the institute
In 1998 it was decided to found the Friends of the Institut français de Stuttgart / Les Amis de l'Institut association with the aim of safeguarding the institute's work for the future. The aim of the Friends of the Institute is to support Franco-German cooperation in the field of culture by providing financial means and contributing their innovative ideas. To this end, the association supports projects and events, is looking for donors and sponsors and is networking with partners.
