Alain Robbe-Grillet

Alain Robbe-Grillet (born August 18, 1922 in Brest , † February 18, 2008 in Caen ) was a French agricultural engineer, filmmaker, writer and member of the Académie française .

Career

Alain Robbe-Grillet studied agricultural science and initially worked at the National Institute for Statistics in Paris. During the Second World War , he had to do labor service in Nuremberg for a year in 1943 .

Through his work, Robbe-Grillet is considered to be one of the fathers of the Nouveau Roman . It is a term that goes back to his essay Pour un Nouveau Roman . This new non-realistic novel should neither reflect reality nor convey messages, but rather depict literary forms and their development. Between violence and eroticism, he always slips soberly and metonymically over sensory impressions. By constantly merging tiny images of pleasure and pain , rather than resorting to coherent , narrative or meaning structures, Robbe-Grillet succeeded not only in changing the concept of literature, but also in playing tricks on the reader's attention .

Alain Robbe-Grillet was married to the writer Catherine Robbe-Grillet since 1957 .

membership

Alain Robbe-Grillet was elected to the Académie française on March 25, 2004 .

Quotes

Because the function of art is never to illustrate a truth - or even a question - that one already knows, but rather to raise questions (and perhaps also to give answers at the right time) that do not yet know themselves.

  2. Robbe-Grillet and Barthes were friends for almost 30 years. It began in 1953 when Barthes praised The Erasers as "successful" because they were "avant-garde". After that, a close relationship developed between the novelist Robbe-Grillet, who praised the writer in the theorist, and the semiologist Barthes, who valued the practicing philosopher of écriture in the novelist . Robbe-Grillet's comments on Barthes show a tension between the pleasure in text and the pleasure in playing with fiction, in which French literature developed in the second half of the 20th century.
