Richard Braungart (born February 19, 1872 in Freising , † February 20, 1963 in Munich ) was a German writer and art critic.

Career

Braungart was born as the son of the agriculture professor Richard Braungart . After graduating from high school in Freising, he first studied law for four years at the University of Munich, followed by another three years of art, music and literature.

After his marriage and the birth of his first daughter, he took a job as an editor at the Münchner Zeitung in 1903 , for which he worked for more than 30 years. In Braungart's department, in particular, theater and art reporting fell. At the same time, he was a permanent employee of various magazines, such as the magazine Die Kunst für Alle , which was initiated by Friedrich Bruckmann , Westermann's monthly magazine , the Leipziger Illustrirten Zeitung and the Berlin magazine Exlibris . After the end of the war he became an art critic for the newly founded Münchner Merkur .

In addition to his editorial work, Braungart also appeared as an author. In addition to two volumes of poetry, he published a number of artist biographies, for example about August Benziger , Wilhelm Busch , Julius Diez , Josse Goossens , Eduard von Grützner , Ludwig Hartmann , Georg Papperitz , Max Rabe, the three brothers Schiestl and Karl Walther, as well as a biography about the art collector Otto Krebs .

His specialty has always been commercial graphics and bookplates . His related works are considered to be the basic works of this art genre. Richard Braungart's own extensive bookplate collection is now owned by the Munich City Museum.

Braungart had a close friendship with the composer Max Reger , whom he helped achieve , especially in Munich. In 1906 Reger took over the baptism sponsorship for Braungart's second daughter Maximiliane out of gratitude.

An intensive pen friendship with Thomas Mann should also be emphasized .

Braungart was an honorary member of the Max Reger Institute and the German Exlibris Society .
