Georg Papperitz

Friedrich Georg Papperitz (born August 3, 1846 in Dresden , † February 26, 1918 in Munich ) was a German painter , poet and sculptor .

Life

Papperitz was the son of the landscape painter Gustav Friedrich Papperitz (born January 27, 1813 in Dresden; † January 16, 1861 ibid). He came into contact with art at an early age through his father and was able to collect further impressions from his acquaintances, including the artists Ernst Hähnel , Julius Hübner Robert Reinick , Ludwig Richter and Johannes Schilling . He studied at the Dresden Art Academy from 1861 to 1864 and, after a period of private studies, at the Antwerp Academy from 1866 to 1868 , where he was impressed by the works of Rubens and van Dyck. A seven-month stay in Paris followed. In 1870 he moved to Munich and was immediately drafted as a soldier in the Franco-German War . after the end of the war he settled in Munich. Study trips took him to Paris , London , Holland , Switzerland and Italy . After dealing primarily with historical and mythological themes, as in the work Arrival in the Underworld , he turned to portraiture in his mature years. He also wrote poetry. In 1896 he was appointed royal professor.
