NGC 219 is a compact, elliptical galaxy of the Hubble-type cE2 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 249 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 196 , NGC 197 , NGC 201 , NGC 223 .
The object was discovered on September 16, 1863 by the American astronomer George Phillips Bond .
