NGC 227 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type S0- in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 240 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 105,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 245 .
The object was discovered on October 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
