NGC 209 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 177 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years across .
The galaxies NGC 179 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on October 9, 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
