NGC 217 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 180 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 145,000 light-years across.

The object was discovered on November 28, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
