NGC 237 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 190 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 1571 .
The object was discovered on September 27, 1867 by the American astronomer Truman Henry Safford .
