NGC 228 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 338 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 229 .
The object was discovered on October 10, 1879 by the French astronomer Édouard Stephan .
