NGC 245 is a spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 186 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across. Together with six other galaxies, it forms the NGC 271 group ( LGG 13 ).
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 227 .
The object was discovered on October 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
