NGC 270 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 171 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 277 and NGC 291 .
The object was discovered on December 10, 1798 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
