NGC 293 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type Sbc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 259 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 274 , NGC 275 , NGC 297 , NGC 298 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on September 27, 1864 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
