NGC 273 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type Sbc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 220 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter . Together with NGC 274 and NGC 275 , it forms the (optical) galaxy trio KTS 7 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 293 .
The object was discovered on September 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
