NGC 271 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic. It is an estimated 188 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light-years across. Together with six other galaxies, it forms the NGC 271 group ( LGG 13 ).
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 279 .
The object was discovered on October 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
