NGC 286 is a lenticular polar ring galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 488 million light years away from the Milky Way and is approximately 190,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 283 , NGC 284 , NGC 285 , IC 56 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on October 2, 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
