NGC 284 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E2 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 517 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 283 , NGC 285 , NGC 286 , IC 56 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on October 2, 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
