NGC 309 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 255 million light years from the Milky Way and about 225,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 301 and IC 1602 are located in the same area of the sky .

The supernovae SN 1999ge (Type II), SN 2008cx (Type IIb), SN 2012dt (Type II) and SN 2014ef (Type Ib) were observed here.

The object was discovered in 1876 by the German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
