NGC 312 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble-type E2 in the constellation Phoenix the southern sky . It is estimated to be 353 million light years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light tubes in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 323 and NGC 328 .
The object was discovered on September 5, 1836 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
