NGC 315 is an elliptical galaxy with an active galaxy core in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 228 million light years from the Milky Way and about 200,000 light years in diameter. She is the namesake of the group of 42 galaxies .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 311 , NGC 318 , NGC 338 , IC 66 .
The object was discovered on September 11, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
