NGC 340 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sb in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 275 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light-years across.
The galaxies NGC 342 , NGC 345 , NGC 347 , NGC 349 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on September 27, 1864 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
