NGC 342 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E5 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 262 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 340 , NGC 345 , NGC 347 , NGC 349 .
The object was discovered on September 27, 1864 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
