NGC 311 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 233 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 315 , NGC 318 , NGC 338 , IC 66 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on September 15, 1828 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
