Uranium / tables and graphs
Here are tables and graphs with information about uranium shown.
overview
Although uranium was extracted for coloring glass and ceramics as early as the 19th century, it was only extracted intensively in the course of the nuclear arms race in the Cold War from 1945/46 and the beginning of civilian use of nuclear energy from 1954. The following quantities of uranium were produced up to 2012:
- Canada: 465,489 tons
- USA: 370,149 tons
- Germany: 219,626 (of which GDR: 213,380t from 1946 to 1989)
- Kazakhstan: 199,413 tons (including the Soviet portion)
- Australia: 183,239 tons
- South Africa: 158,718 tons
- Russian Federation: 152,718 tons (including the Soviet portion)
- Ukraine: 127,924 tons (including the Soviet portion)
- Niger: 123,432 tons
- Uzbekistan: 122,791 tons (including the Soviet portion)
- Namibia: 113,323 tons
- Czech Republic: 111,396 tons (of which CSSR / CSFR: 102,241 tons 1946 to 1992)
- France: 80,963 tons
After the Second World War , extensive uranium mining for the Soviet Union by the SAG / SDAG Wismut took place in eastern Germany . Larger deposits were mainly in East Thuringia , the Ore Mountains and Saxon Switzerland . From 1946 until production was discontinued at the end of December 1990, around 216,400 tons of uranium were produced by the Wismut, with production peaking in the 1960s at around 7,000 tons per year. The bismuth became federal property in 1990. The successor company Wismut GmbH, as a federal company, is entrusted with the rehabilitation and recultivation of the legacies of the bismuth mining. As part of the mine water cleaning on the members of the bismuth GmbH pit Koenigstein produced small residual amounts of uranium here. In western Germany, smaller uranium deposits in the Black Forest , Bavarian Forest and Fichtel Mountains have been explored, but no industrial extraction has been started.
In 2019, global uranium production was 53,656 tons, which is hardly a change from the previous year (2015: 53,498 tons). Compared to the last 5 years, the funding has fallen by over 10% and is now back at the 2010 level.
The most important producing countries were Kazakhstan (22,808 tons), Canada (6,938 tons) and Australia (6,613 tons), which accounted for around two thirds of world production. In Europe, only Ukraine currently produces uranium (801 tons). In Germany were under the mine water cleaning on the members of the bismuth GmbH pit Koenigstein last in 2014 still produces 33 tons of uranium. The uranium mines in Russia are located in the Asian part of the country.
In several European countries, including Sweden , Spain , Finland , Poland and Slovakia , however, exploration work has been carried out again in recent years.
The eligible reserves were estimated by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in 2008 at 1.766 million tons worldwide. Of this, Australia accounted for 40.1 percent, Canada for 15.3 percent and Kazakhstan for 13.3 percent.
With an annual consumption of more than 60,000 tons of uranium, there has been a gap between production and consumption since 1990. This gap has been filled with previously established civilian and military stocks, which are being gradually reduced. The bulk consumers USA , France , Japan , Germany and South Korea have only a small amount of self-production (USA) or are completely dependent on imports.

Uranium price
The following table shows the annual high, low and closing prices for uranium oxide (U 3 O 8 ) of the TradeTech Uranium Spot Price Indicator in US dollars per pound (454 grams). TradeTech and its predecessor NUEXCO have published uranium market prices since the establishment of the commercial nuclear fuel market in 1968.
