The Société du Patrimoine des Mines du Niger (SOPAMIN) is a stock corporation in Niger through which the Nigerien state handles its interests in several mining companies.

history

SOPAMIN is the successor company to the Office National des Ressources Minières (ONAREM). ONAREM was founded on August 26th, 1976 under Head of State Seyni Kountché to promote the search, development and exploitation of all mineral resources in the national territory and to ensure the participation of the state in mining companies. At the beginning this concerned the uranium mining in Arlit and Akouta , later there was the exploitation of other mineral resources such as gold.

President Mamadou Tandja founded SOPAMIN by an ordinance of August 17, 2007, which was modified by another ordinance issued by Head of State Salou Djibo on April 1, 2010.

Corporate structure

SOPAMIN is a Société Anonyme based in Niamey . Its share capital is 1 billion CFA francs . The 100,000 shares of SOPAMIN are owned by three shareholders: 98% is held by the Nigerien state, 1% each by Société Nigérienne du Charbon d'Anou Araren (SONICHAR) and Compagnie Minière et Energétique du Niger (CMEN). The highest executive body is a board of directors with eleven members. The Cabinet of the President of the Republic sends two representatives to the Board of Directors, the Ministry of Mines three representatives and the Prime Minister's Cabinet, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SONICHAR and CMEN each have one representative. In 2012, the Council of Ministers appointed Mahamane Moustapha Barké as General Director of SOPAMIN. Zada Mahamadou succeeded him in 2013.
