history

Areva is the majority owner of two other Nigerian uranium mining companies, the Société des Mines de l'Aïr (SOMAÏR) founded in 1968 and the Compagnie Minière d'Akouta (COMINAK) founded in 1974 . In 2006, Areva received approval to explore the Imouraren uranium deposit , which was discovered in 1966 and is considered the largest in Africa, and in 2007 carried out studies on its economic viability and environmental impact.

On January 5, 2009, Imouraren SA was founded for the exploitation of the uranium deposit, in which initially only Areva held 66.65% and SOPAMIN with 33.35%. When French President Nicolas Sarkozy traveled to Niamey to see Nigerien President Mamadou Tandja to represent Areva’s interests in relation to imouraries, Tandja used this to secure the support of France in his plan to take up a third term as President, which is not provided for in the constitution . Areva later sold some of its shares. In December 2009, KEPCO acquired 10% of the shares including 10% of the expected uranium production for a one-off payment of 170 million euros. In this context, KEPCO also participated in the newly built uranium enrichment plant Georges Besse II in France, which is operated by the Areva subsidiary Eurodif . In February 2012 EdF received a 12.7% stake in Imouraren SA from Areva

The China Nuclear International Uranium Corporation (Sinou), a subsidiary of Chinese state-owned company China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), which in Niger already at the Societe des Mines d'Azelik is involved (Somina), agreed in January 2013 to 200 million Euros to acquire a 10% stake in Imouraren SA from Areva. The negotiations have not yet been concluded (as of April 2013). The start of production in the Imouraren uranium mine, which is currently under construction and which has been postponed several times, has been announced for 2015.
