Bernhard Stümpel

Bernhard Stümpel (born September 12, 1924 in Geseke ; † July 1, 1994 in Mainz ) was a German prehistorian and monument conservator .

Bernhard Stümpel attended school in Herne . After his military service and captivity, he studied at the Universities of Münster and Mainz . In Mainz he was born in 1956 with the work Spät latènekeramik in Rheinhessen . A study on the question of Wangions is doing his doctorate. From 1955 he initially worked on a voluntary basis at the Mainz Museum of Antiquities , where he was responsible for the preservation of monuments in the Rheinhessen administrative district, succeeding Heinz Schermer . In 1964, the preservation of monuments became an independent office under Stümpels full-time management. At the end of his career he was in charge of monument preservation in Rhineland-Palatinate . Due to diabetes , he had to retire early in 1982 and later also lost his eyesight. His research focused in particular on the Alzey district , with Hartmut Polenz he carried out excavations in the Merovingian cemetery in Langenlonsheim . Alongside Gustav Behrens , he is considered to be one of the most important researchers in the field of the prehistory of the city of Mainz .
