NGC 278 is a spiral dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Cassiopeia in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 36 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years in diameter.

The object was discovered on December 11, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
