NGC 255 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 73 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on November 27, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
