NGC 238 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Phoenix in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 381 million light years from the Milky Way and about 230,000 ly in diameter.
The object was discovered on October 2, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
