NGC 232 is an active bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBa with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 304 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 230 , NGC 235 , IC 1573 are located in the same area of the sky .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2006et was observed here.

The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
