NGC 230 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa? in the constellation Whale at the celestial equator , which is an estimated 302 million light years from the Milky Way . The galaxies NGC 232 and IC 1573 are in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
