NGC 222 denotes an open star cluster that belongs to the Small Magellanic Cloud . It was discovered by James Dunlop on August 1, 1826 and is located in the constellation Toucan . NGC 222 is located on the western edge of the Small Magellanic Cloud when viewed from Earth and forms the middle link in a chain of three open star clusters in this area, to which NGC 220 and NGC 231 also belong. NGC 222 is estimated to be 70 to 100 million years old.
