NGC 239 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 173 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 50,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 1575 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
