NGC 229 is a galaxy of Hubble type S? in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 335 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 228 .
The object was discovered on October 10, 1879 by the French astronomer Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
