NGC 223 = IC 44 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a / P in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 242 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter. 
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 196 , NGC 197 , NGC 201 , NGC 219 .
The object was discovered on January 5, 1853 by George Phillips Bond ; independently of this, she also discovered Heinrich Louis d'Arrest . It was later described by Lewis Swift (November 21, 1886).
