IC 48 = IC 1577 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 269 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by Edward Barnard on November 30, 1888 .
