IC 49 is a spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type Sc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 208 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter.

The Type Ib supernova SN 1991ar was observed here.

The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 18, 1890 .
