IC 33 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is around 749 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 155,000 light years . Because of their nearly identical distance and direction, IC 33 and IC 32 could be a gravitationally bound pair .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 161 , IC 29 , IC 30 , IC 1557 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on November 6, 1891 .
