NGC 161 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 276 million light years from the Milky Way and about 105,000 light years in diameter . Together with IC 1557 it probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.
The galaxies IC 29 , IC 30 , IC 32 , IC 33 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on November 21, 1886 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
