Swiss parliamentary elections 2003
The Swiss parliamentary elections in 2003 took place on October 19, 2003. The 200 mandates of the National Council and 41 of the 46 mandates in the Council of States were to be newly awarded. This 47th legislative period lasted four years until October 2007.
In the National Council, the SVP was the clear winner with 11 seats (including 6 in French-speaking Switzerland ). The Greens also won 4 seats. The bourgeois parties CVP and FDP each lost 7 seats. This strengthened the poles at the expense of the center parties.
In the Council of States, the SP won 3 seats and held nine seats, which brought it back to its 1979 record. The FDP lost four seats and was no longer the strongest party in the small chamber for the first time since 1991.
Election mode
National Council
The national councils have been elected according to the proportional representation system since 1919 . H. the seats are distributed in the individual cantons according to the proportion of voters on the party lists and only within the list according to the individual votes. The number of seats per canton is determined based on the number of inhabitants.

Council of States
Every canton has elected two representatives for the Council of States since 1848 ( half-cantons : one representative). The elections to the Council of States are based on cantonal law. With the exception of the canton of Jura, all cantons apply the majority vote . With the exception of the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden , Zug and Graubünden , all cantons were also elected on October 19th.

Deviations from the information provided by the Federal Statistical Office are due to the following differences:
- The Federal Statistical Office counts the SVP-affiliated group "Active Seniors" in the cantons of Aargau and Lucerne as an independent party. Here their votes are assigned to the SVP.
- In the cantons of Glarus and Appenzell Innerrhoden , the Federal Statistical Office listed all but the elected candidates at the Federal Statistical Office under "Other". Here, however, their votes are assigned to the respective party.
