Swiss parliamentary elections 1848 / results of the National Council elections
The National Council elections for the first legislative period took place in October 1848. There were 111 seats to be filled in the Swiss National Council . The detailed results in the cantons can be found on this page.
Explanations
As in all elections before the introduction of proportional representation , which is customary today, in 1919, majority voting was applied. For this purpose the country was divided into 57 national council constituencies of different sizes , in which one to four seats were to be allocated. The so-called Romance majority vote was used , in which a candidate needed an absolute majority of the votes cast in order to be elected. Each voter had as many votes as there were seats to be allocated. Up to six ballots were necessary in individual constituencies.
In the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , Appenzell Innerrhoden , Glarus , Obwalden , Nidwalden and Uri , the election was made by the respective regional municipality . For this reason, exact results are not available.
- Constituency: The cantonal governments determined the number and size of the constituencies themselves, as there were no statutory provisions at federal level. The constituencies linked on this page generally correspond to those that were used in 1851 and remained unchanged. The following articles have a lemma with an unofficial geographical name.
- Selected candidates are highlighted in bold , candidates not selected are highlighted in italics
Parties
Allocation of candidates to parties and political groups is only possible to a limited extent, as they did not run on official party lists. According to the political reality of the 19th century, one can speak more of party currents or directions. The party names used are therefore an ideological assessment.
- FL = liberal left ( liberal , radical, radical democrats)
- LM = Liberal Middle (Liberals, Liberal Democrats)
- KK = Catholic Conservative
- ER = Evangelical Rights (Evangelical / Reformed Conservatives)
- DL = Democratic Left (extreme left)

Canton of Friborg (5 seats)
The government of the canton of Friborg, which was still militarily occupied after the Sonderbund War , established five constituencies. In each of these constituencies it was only possible to vote in one place. In this way, the influence of the former conservative rulers and the Catholic clergy should be reduced as much as possible. In addition, voters were required to take an oath on the new liberal cantonal constitution before voting.

Canton of Geneva (3 seats)
The Geneva cantonal government canceled the first ballot because the number of ballot papers received was said to have been higher than the number of ballot papers distributed. In reality, the radicals did not accept the moderate liberals' election victory and urged the government not to accept the results. The moderate liberals refused to take part in the second ballot, but still received a number of votes in favor. Meanwhile, Guillaume-Henri Dufour was a successful candidate in the Canton of Bern.

In order to keep the influence of the Catholic Conservatives as low as possible, it was only possible to vote at six election meetings with open voting, led by government representatives. The results were then added up, but these are only rough estimates.
