Johann Heinrich Heim

Johann Heinrich Heim (born November 16, 1802 in Gais ; † December 22, 1876 ​​there ) was a Swiss politician and doctor . From 1848 to 1851 he was a member of the National Council. He promoted the whey cure in Gais and implemented numerous liberal reforms in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

biography

The son of the landlord Samuel Heim, who played a key role in establishing Gais as a whey health resort , attended a private institute in Altstätten and the high school in Biel . He then studied theology at the Universities of Zurich and Tübingen . Due to an injury that he sustained in a duel in Tübingen , he changed subjects and studied medicine in Würzburg and Paris . From 1825 Heim ran a doctor's practice in Gais and promoted the whey cure there. Two years later he was one of the founders of the Society of Appenzell Doctors.

In the 1830s Heim campaigned for various reforms in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden . He was the main initiator of the revision of the land register , advocated the free settlement of Catholics, called for the humanization of the penal system and the abolition of the death penalty . 1833/34 and 1845-1848 Municipality captain of Gais and Auserrhoder Grand Council . From 1834 he was a member of the cantonal government , where his almost doctrinal liberal attitude aroused great resistance. This led to his being voted out of office in 1845. However, three years later he returned to the cantonal government. In the first nationwide elections in October 1848 Heim was elected to the National Council, whereupon he joined the free-thinking parliamentary group. In 1851 he resigned from the National Council for professional reasons, and two years later he also gave up his government mandate.
