Life

Studies and party official

Born in a peasant family, Berecz began studying at the Leninist Institute of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in 1951 and in the same year joined the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) . In 1955 he became an employee of the Union of Young Workers DISZ (Dolgozó Ifjúság Szövetsége) in Budapest and then in October 1956 of the Union of University and College Employees MEFESZ (Magyar Egyetemisták és Főiskolások Szövetsége) , before shortly afterwards head of the department for secondary schools and universities KISZ (Magyar Kommunista Ifjúsági Szövetség) became the youth association of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt), which emerged from the MDP .

After studying history at the Academy of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow , Berecz first became Second Secretary of the MSZMP City Administration in Budapest after his return in 1966 and, shortly afterwards, in autumn 1966, Party Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He then became deputy head in September 1972, before becoming head of the Central Committee for Foreign Affairs on June 20, 1974. During this time he was on the XII. Party congress on March 27, 1980 also elected a member of the Central Committee of the MSZMP.

Editor-in-chief of Népszabadság , Central Committee secretary and member of parliament

As the successor to Péter Várkonyi , he took over the position of editor-in-chief of Népszabadság on June 23, 1982 and held this position until he was replaced by Gábor Borbély on March 27, 1985.

He himself was on the XIII. Party congress of the MSZMP on March 28, 1985 successor to Miklós Óvári as Central Committee secretary for ideology. At the same time he also became chairman of the MSZMP committee on agitation and propaganda. Shortly afterwards, on June 8, 1985, he was also elected Member of Parliament (Országgyűlés) and was a member of this until October 1989 as a representative of the 6th constituency of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County .

On June 23, 1987, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and was a member of this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until April 12, 1989. At the same time, he became the deputy of János Kádár as Vice-Secretary General of the MSZMP and was able to prevail against Prime Minister Károly Grósz , who, however, was elected on May 22, 1988 at the national conference of the MSZMP as the new General Secretary of the MSZMP and thus Kádár's successor.

In June 1989 he was initially dismissed as Central Committee Secretary for Ideology and in July 1989 also lost his membership in the Central Committee of the MSZMP.

After the transformation of the MSZMP in October 1989 into the Hungarian Socialist Party MSZP (Magyar Szocialista Párt) he ran for this in the parliamentary elections in 1990, but suffered a defeat and left the party in 1991. In 1994 he founded a company and in 1997 he joined the Hungarian Social Democratic Party MSZDP (Magyarországi Szociáldemokrata Párt) as a member, but left it again in 1999. In the following years he withdrew from political life and later published numerous books on political topics and the modern history of Hungary during the time under János Kádár.

In 1988, Berecz was the second wife of the actress Anikó Sáfár , who had made a name for herself as a nude star in films by the Budapest director Miklós Jancsó .
