The Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party ( USAP ; Hungarian Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt , MSZMP for short ) was a political party in Hungary that existed from 1956 to 1989 .

The USAP was the legal successor to Magyar Dolgozók Pártja (MDP), the "Party of the Hungarian Working People", which existed from 1949 to 1956. It was founded by János Kádár in December 1956 after the bloody suppression of the Hungarian popular uprising .

In October 1989 the party was transformed into the “ Hungarian Socialist Party(Magyar Szocialista Párt, MSZP) and was subsequently given a social democratic character. The old communists, who did not agree with this reorientation, founded the communist -oriented "Hungarian Communist Workers' Party" (Magyar Kommunista Munkáspárt) under their chairman Gyula Thürmer .
