Hungarian Socialist Workers Party
The Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party ( USAP ; Hungarian Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt , MSZMP for short ) was a political party in Hungary that existed from 1956 to 1989 .
The USAP was the legal successor to Magyar Dolgozók Pártja (MDP), the "Party of the Hungarian Working People", which existed from 1949 to 1956. It was founded by János Kádár in December 1956 after the bloody suppression of the Hungarian popular uprising .
In October 1989 the party was transformed into the “ Hungarian Socialist Party ” (Magyar Szocialista Párt, MSZP) and was subsequently given a social democratic character. The old communists, who did not agree with this reorientation, founded the communist -oriented "Hungarian Communist Workers' Party" (Magyar Kommunista Munkáspárt) under their chairman Gyula Thürmer .
Party congresses of the MSZMP
The party congresses began counting at the party congresses of the previous MDP or the previous Hungarian Communist Party MKP (Magyar Kommunista Párt) , so that the first party congress of the MSZMP on December 5, 1959 was counted as the 7th Party Congress. The party congresses between 1956 and 1989 took place as follows:
- 05.12.1959: VII Party Congress
- The party congress leads to a consolidation of Kádár's rule.
- November 24, 1962: 8th Party Congress
- December 3rd, 1966: IX. Party congress
- For those on the IX. The economic reform adopted by the party congress also needs non-party experts, whom Kádár seeks to win with the motto “Whoever is not against us is for us”.
- November 28, 1970: Xth Party Congress
- The 10th party congress adopts a new party statute: deselection of functionaries in the event of “abuse of power” and “suppression of criticism”. The general secretary of the CPSU , Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev , recognizes Kádár's "course of the middle". Announcement of a new constitution with the upgrading of the functions of parliament (Országgyűlés) . A new electoral law allows every citizen to apply for a parliamentary seat.
- March 22, 1975: XI. Party congress
- The XI. The party congress confirms that the previous course of the middle has been maintained: the stability of the reformed Hungarian economy, which is adapted to the current conditions (global economy: energy crisis, domestic economy: labor shortage), is being recognized internationally on the tenth anniversary of economic reform. In the mid-1970s there was a cautious restriction of planning freedom, and in 1976 there were price increases.
