Ilona Tatai

Ilona Tatai (born January 19, 1935 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian economic manager and politician of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who, among other things, was director general of the rubber manufacturer Taurus between 1975 and 1990. On May 22, 1988 she was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and was a member of this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until June 24, 1989. After Valéria Benke and Judit Csehák, she was the third and last woman in the MSZMP Politburo and the first female economic manager in this position.

Life

After attending school in Kőbánya, Ilona Tatei, the daughter of a worker, began working as a chemical laboratory assistant at the Áron Gábor School for Artillery Technology in 1952 and switched to the Hungarian pipe works Magyar Adócsőgyárban in 1957 , before working as a laboratory assistant and manager at Ruggyantaárugyárnálán in 1959 Plant for the production of synthetic resin . In addition, she completed an evening course in chemical engineering at the Technical University of Budapest (BEM), which she graduated in 1962. In 1964 she became a research assistant at the National Rubber Society (Országos Gumiipari Vállalatnál) . In 1965, Ilona Tatai, who joined at the same time, began an apprenticeship at the Sergei Wassiljewitsch Lebedew Research Institute for Synthetic Rubber in Leningrad , graduating in 1968 as a candidate for chemical sciences.

After her return to Hungary, she joined the Taurus tire factory (Taurus Abroncsgyárban) as a department head , where she became technical production manager in 1970. Then she was between 1975 and 1990 general manager of the Taurus rubber company (Taurus Gumiipari Vállalat) . As such, she led the company out of the recession during the Hungarian economic crisis and during this time also completed a distance learning course in political economy at the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the Central Committee of the CPSU , from which she graduated in 1976 with a diploma. During her time as General Director of Taurus, she and a team of scientists also developed various patents , such as processes and systems for the crushing of rubber waste and rubber scrap (1982), a device for crushing organic substances (1987) and a process for the vulcanization of laminar rubber products (1987). In 1988 she was awarded the Hungarian State Prize (A Magyar Népköztársaság Állami Díja) for her services as a chemical engineer and CEO of Taurus .

With the onset of the political crisis in Hungary at the end of the 1980s, she increasingly took on higher political functions within the MSZMP and at the plenary session on June 23, 1987, she became a member of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and a member of the party's economic committee. On May 22, 1988 she was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and was a member of this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until June 24, 1989. After Valéria Benke and Judit Csehák, she was the third and last woman in the MSZMP Politburo and the first female economic manager in this position.

In the elections for the four-member party presidency of the MSZMP - the successor body of the Politburo - on June 24, 1989, however, it was defeated by the male competitors Károly Grósz (Secretary General of the party), Prime Minister Miklós Németh and the two ministers of state Rezső Nyers and Imre Pozsgay .
