In 1997 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Cultural Studies with the thesis Liberalism and Democracy - Antinomy and Synthesis. On the relationship between two political currents in the Vormärz . Hermann Joseph Hiery (Bayreuth) and Hans Maier (Munich) acted as reviewers for the work .

In 1997/98 Backes received a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Center d'Étude pour la Vie Politique Française (CEVIPOF) in Paris and in 1998/99 a Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Research Foundation in Washington, DC and London. In the meantime he taught as a private lecturer at the University of Bayreuth. In the 1998 summer semester, he was Otto von Freising visiting professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt .

Research activity

Backes researches primarily in the areas of democratic theory , the history of ideology , comparative extremism research, and authoritarian and totalitarian dictatorships . Together with Jesse and the representative of the New Right Rainer Zitelmann, he founded the Veldensteiner Kreis .

Together with Eckhard Jesse (and Alexander Gallus ), Backes publishes the yearbook Extremism & Democracy . He is also the editor of the series Extremismus & Demokratie (Nomos Verlag) and editor-in-chief of the journal Totalitarismus und Demokratie of the Hannah Arendt Institute (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht) with Jesse . As part of his work for this magazine, Backes unconsciously took a text from a satirical group and edited it. The completely devised text appeared unobjectionable in totalitarianism and democracy . The satirical group wants to "stimulate a discussion about why committed social criticism has become an exception in the humanities".

At the end of 1999 Backes encouraged his colleague at the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism, Lothar Fritze , to publish his controversial theses about the Hitler attack by Georg Elser in the Frankfurter Rundschau . Fritze had expressed himself critical of Elser's approach and expressed the opinion that Elser's behavior should not be unconditionally assessed as exemplary. Backes was therefore also sharply attacked within the Hannah Arendt Institute and asked to resign.

In March 2011 Backes received a cartridge from the left-wing extremist “ Revolutionary Action Cells ”. A letter of confession published on the Internet threatened that “the next delivery would be by express”. In addition to Backes, this action also affected his colleague Eckhard Jesse and Federal Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich .
