Peter Haungs

Peter Haungs (born April 12, 1939 in Lahr ; † May 24, 1994 in Trier ) was a German political scientist who dealt in particular with party democracy. From 1972 he was professor at the University of Trier and from 1987 to 1989 chairman of the German Society for Political Science .

Life

Haungs was the son of a master painter . He studied political science , history and constitutional law at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau (1958 to 1959), Berlin (1959 to 1960) and Heidelberg (from 1960). His academic teachers included a. Werner Conze and Dolf Sternberger . In 1966 he became President of the Reich and parliamentary cabinet government with Sternberger at the Philosophical Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg with a dissertation . A study of the government system of the Weimar Republic from 1924 to 1929 for Dr. phil. PhD.

During the time of the West German student unrest in the 1960s , he became Sternberger's research assistant at the Institute for Political Science there; after his death (1989) he published his works. In 1970 he represented Hans Buchheim's professorship at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and then Sternberger's in Heidelberg. Studying for several months took him to the Institut d'études politiques de Paris , where he familiarized himself with the French political system . In 1971 he became a professor at the University of Trier , initially as a scientific adviser and head of department. In 1972 he was appointed professor for political science at the Trier-Kaiserslautern University.

Haungs acted as dean (1983 to 1985) of Faculty III, as chairman of the assembly (1993 to 1994) and as a member of the Senate of the University of Trier. He was also a co-founder and from 1987 to 1989 chairman of the German Society for Political Science (DGfP). After reunification, he helped set up the political science department at the Universities of Rostock and Erfurt . Haungs has published extensive books, articles in edited volumes and journal articles, etc. a. in the yearbook for politics and the yearbook extremism & democracy ; he mainly dealt with the sub-discipline of government : he did research in the field of election analysis , turned to party research and devoted himself to comparative research on democracy . The book Party Democracy in the Federal Republic of Germany is now considered a standard work . He was also co-editor of the series of articles on contemporary history and the journal Politische Bildung .

He was a member of the CDU , which he also knew how to criticize from an academic point of view. Haungs advocated both constitutional patriotism and national unity . In retrospect, Haungs is considered to be a relevant, competent and mediating scientist in the eyes of his student Eckhard Jesse .
