Carlo Masala

Carlo Masala (born March 27, 1968 in Cologne ) is a German political scientist , professor and holder of the chair for international politics at the faculty for political and social sciences at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in Neubiberg .

Life

From 1988 to 1992 Masala studied political science as well as German and Romance philology at the University of Cologne (M.A. 1992) and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In Cologne he then worked initially as a research assistant and later as an academic adviser . In 1996 he was at Werner Link at the city's Department of Political Science and European Affairs with a dissertation on the German-Italian relations to Dr. phil. PhD . A year later he became a Senior Fellow at the Center for European Integration Research (ZEI) there. In 2002 he completed his habilitation in political science on the southern threat to European security.

A year later he took over a chair at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich . From 2004 he worked as a research advisor at the NATO Defense College in Rome . From 2006 to 2007 he was Deputy Director in the Academic Research Branch. Since July 2007 he has held the professorship for international politics at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. In 2011 he became dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. In 2016 he turned down an offer at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . Visiting professorships and research stays have taken him to the United States and various European countries. He is considered a neorealist and researches mainly in the areas of international politics / foreign policy , comparative governance , security policy , transatlantic relations and current developments in the Mediterranean region .

Masala is a member of the German Society for Political Science (from 2015 to 2017 as chairman) and the German Society for Foreign Policy . He has also been a member of the scientific advisory board at the Federal Ministry of Education and Science for the social science part of security research since 2009 . Since 2010 he has published the magazine for international relations together with Stephan Stetter ; He is also co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Politik and Sirius. Journal for Strategic Analysis .
